Getting around in Chania

Getting to Chania

You can travel to Chania by plane or ferry. There are frequent flights from Athens and direct routes from many European cities. The ferry typically departs from Piraeus at 22:00 and arrives in Souda (Chania) at 06:30 the next morning. These ferries are spacious and offer cabins. For schedules, visit Ferryhopper. Once you find an itinerary, book directly through the ferry company to avoid extra fees and ensure flexibility.

Getting around in Chania

Getting around in Chania is easy. You can either walk to most places, or easily hail a cab on the street or through taxi apps (FREENOW recommended, UBER also available).Crete is a large island with many beautiful places to explore and I do recommend getting out of town to visit some of them. Given that there are not many reliable public transportation options, I recommend renting a car to make the most of your visit.

Where to Stay

For first-time visitors, I recommend staying near the Old Venetian Port in Chania. It's a vibrant area with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops, all set alongside historic landmarks. There are two small beach areas (Nea Chora, Koum Kapi) within walking distance. There are also many accommodation options around Chania for those who prefer to be closer to the beach or want larger places to stay.
